Unlike taking public transportation, where programmers can safely drift into another world of thought, driving demands they stay sharply focused on reality to avoid accidents.
I don't think there's anything special about programmers in this. I think that driving helps increase the separation between people and the real world. Both a literal, physical separation as well as a psychological one.
